Engage for Change | national consists of task forces on specific topics that bring diverse stakeholders together to discuss
- current research and data;
- best practices;
- and possible strategies, actions, or initiatives to address key issues.
NDC seeks to facilitate partnerships that can help to move the field forward in places where no one organization or entity can make an impact on its own. Engage for Change | national task forces discuss issues surrounding accessible assessment, quality of access providers, standards for college, and career readiness for the diverse deaf student population.
Self-Determination Task Force
The purpose of this task force is to convene thought leaders to discuss self-determination, which is the sum of an individual's attitudes, characteristics, skills, knowledge, beliefs and perspectives that leads them to define their own goals, act autonomously, and self-regulate. Self-determination among deaf high school students is linked to greater autonomy, living independently, positive self-beliefs and positive adult outcomes, including postsecondary enrollment, higher wages and career advancement.
Assessment Task Force
The purpose of this task force is to convene thought leaders to discuss the accessibility of assessments for deaf individuals in postsecondary environments and develop products and resources to move the field forward. This task force has developed new resources that support improved assessment accessibility for deaf test takers. The first resource provides a rationale why deaf test takers may need accommodations, and the second discusses how to apply testing standards to deaf individuals.
Postsecondary Interpreting Task Force
The purpose of this task force is to convene thought leaders to discuss and identify important elements related to interpreting for deaf students in postsecondary settings. This task force identified the topic of social justice as a critical area of focus for interpreters working in postsecondary environments to help them maximize their contributions to closing the achievement gaps for deaf individuals. Resources will be developed to support interpreters and interpreter training programs in integrating social justice perspectives into their work.
Adult Education Task Force
The purpose of this task force is to convene thought leaders to discuss and identify issues related to data, best practices, and program components in adult education for deaf individuals. This task force identified opportunities and challenges related to collecting data about deaf students in adult education settings. Resources will be developed that respond to those opportunities and challenges.
