Commencements for All: Webinar for Making Graduation Accessible

Every student looks forward to that one special day when all their hard work is rewarded, and their accomplishments celebrated- graduation. The pomp and circumstance, the ceremony, and loved ones gathered together should make for one of the most memorable days of a student’s life.

Too often, this special moment can be ruined for deaf students, their family, and friends without access. Full accessibility to the event for both the student and the audience must be an important part of the event planning process.

The National Deaf Center on Postsecondary Outcomes (NDC) will be hosting a webinar March 24th, 2022 from 1-2:30pm CT to help guide attendees through best practices and strategies for common questions when setting up accommodations for graduation.

What does your college have planned? Are they including someone to oversee accessibility at the planning table? Is the event advertised as accessible for attendees or is there information provided on how attendees can request accommodations? What about access for virtual graduations or mask requirements? These and many more questions are important things for coordinators to consider and will be discussed at the webinar.

The event will feature a 45 minute presentation by NDC’s Lore Kinast. Lore has served on commencement planning committees and has extensive experience using creative strategies to coordinate access for deaf students, families, faculty, staff, and visitors participating in graduation programs. This presentation will be followed by participant breakout groups to further share tips, discuss strategies, or ask related planning questions. We invite you to join the dialogue.

Participants wanting CEUs must attend the entire event program.
