Building Relationships with Deaf Students
Ever wonder how deaf students navigate their college experience? Deaf students often face unique challenges both in and outside the classroom, whether accessing extracurricular activities, requesting accommodations, navigating disability disclosure, or connecting with the campus community.
Engaging with deaf students and learning from them is essential to creating campus environments that provide opportunities for them to thrive! That’s why NDC is hosting an online engagement session with new and returning deaf college students so you can get a first-hand account of their experiences on (and off) campus.
NDC Community Engagement Manager, Diego Guerra, will facilitate the student panel, Building Relationships: Students’ Experiences, on September 22, 2022, from 1-2 pm CT. They will be joined by Brittany (RIT), Sam (CSUN), and Precious (Texas State University). In this session, we will examine how relationships with these students can increase their likelihood of feeling supported and included. Attendees will learn strategies for providing engagement opportunities on campus for deaf students and leverage community resources to build partnerships across campus to facilitate these opportunities.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Understand some common barriers deaf students encounter with accessing engagement opportunities on campuses.
- Gain tools to evaluate their current infrastructure.
- Learn strategies for providing deaf students opportunities for engagement on campus, and leverage campus and community resources to build partnerships that offer spaces for these meetings.
