Seven Presentations at AERA 2020 Highlight NDC’s Innovative Research Findings

Researchers from the National Deaf Center on Postsecondary Outcomes (NDC) were originally scheduled to make seven presentations—the most ever at a conference by NDC staff—at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) 2020 Annual Meeting on April 17-21, the world’s largest gathering of education researchers and a showcase for innovative studies. Because the conference was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the papers and presentations will be uploaded to the AERA Online Repository to expand their impact, discoverability, and authentication.

A Spark to Ignite #DeafSuccess: 2019 Impact Report

A deaf student learned about a deaf adult living a dream they thought was impossible. A student organization founded at a college is connecting deaf students on campus. New summer programs are helping deaf youth connect with mentors, and thousands of deaf high schoolers across the country are learning how to advocate for themselves in a fun way.
These are just a few examples from the National Deaf Center’s 2019 Impact Report, “A Spark to Ignite #DeafSuccess.” It details the barriers NDC helped break down throughout the year, and provides a glimpse into the organization’s continued work in 2020.

‘Begrudging Tolerance’: New Report Reveals Deaf Students’ Experience On Campus

“There has been no institutional interest in learning how to become more deaf friendly. The attitude is one of begrudging tolerance at best.”

Deaf students across the country echoed this student’s story in the 2018-2019 Deaf College Student National Accessibility Report, “ACCESS Is More Than Accommodations,” released today by the National Deaf Center on Postsecondary Outcomes.


The Significance of Harvard’s Settlement on Video Accessibility

Recently, Harvard University settled a class action lawsuit filed in 2015 by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD). The case revolved around the lack of captioning for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). NAD also sued the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for similar reasons and that case is still being litigated.

The Department of Justice made statements that the universities were discriminating against deaf individuals by “failing to provide equal access in the form of captions.”
