Professional Preparedness and Perspectives on Transition for Deaf Individuals

The purpose of this investigation was to explore professionals' perspectives on what contributes to successful transition for deaf individuals, as well as their own self-perceived preparedness. This study was based on data from a large-scale needs assessment project in which 305 participants provided their professional perspectives through focus groups, national surveys, and interviews. The professionals described experiences of transition for deaf individuals, as well as their own perceived efficacy. The findings in the article discussed the importance of ASL proficiency for communication and years of experience of working with a wide range of deaf individuals with additional disabilities. Further implications for professional training programs and future research are discussed.
