Why Test Accommodations Are Important for Deaf Students



Assessment accommodations are changes in testing materials or procedures that lessen barriers to access but do not change the test construct, or what the test is intended to measure. Deaf individuals are diverse with varying needs. Accommodations that increase accessibility for deaf individuals are therefore variable across this population. Examples of accommodations that deaf individuals may use during a test include signed presentation of directions and/or test items, administration in a separate setting, or extended time. The purpose of this brief is to describe why deaf individuals may need accommodations to increase access to test content.
